Flood alert issued to 200 TN villages
Chembarambakkam, Puzhal, Poondi and Porur reservoirs are on the verge of overflowing due to heavy rains.

Chennai: With the North East Monsoon rains filling all lakes and reservoirs in and around the city to near capacity and an overflow expected anytime now, the state government has issued a flood alert to over 200 villages located around these water bodies.

Heavy rains, which lashed the city for the past two weeks, have filled the Chembarambakkam, Puzhal, Poondi and Porur reservoirs and they are on the verge of overflowing.

It can be recalled that last year's unprecedented rains had flooded all villages around these reservoirs and the state administration had struggled to bring the situation under control.

This year, the residents have been asked to return to safer places from their villages and state teams have been assigned specific tasks for rescue and rehabilitation in case of any flooding, Secretariat sources said.

Meanwhile, with the trough of low pressure hovering over the Tamil Nadu-Andhra Pradesh coasts persisting, Tamil Nadu and Pondicherry will experience medium and slight rainfall within the next 24 hours beginning at 0830 hrs IST on Sunday, Met department sources said.

Chennai will generally remain cloudy till Monday and will experience rainfall in a few areas, they said.

The trough, which was formed a few days ago, has not moved due to which Tamil Nadu and Pondicherry have been experiencing intermittent rainfall.
