New Delhi: Google has launched Gmail on mobile phones - a service that was earlier provided by its rivals Yahoo, Microsoft and America Online.
The latest addition to the Mountain View, California-based Internet search engine is a free downloadable Java application, which delivers Gmail on the mobile phone through an interface.
Though Gmail is already available on handheld devices, the new service - christened Google for Mobile - gives to the user features like search through email history, organise email according to conversation and automatic synchronisation with the desktop version - so that any email read on the phone show up as already read on a PC.
The new application is upto five times faster than the existing version and can automatically pre-fetch messages. It can also instantly resize word documents and photo attachments, which automatically resize to fit the user's phone size - all this with a reduced amount of clicking and scrolling.
The functions are akin to those available on a desktop computer. The application is currently compatible with all J2ME-enabled phones in the United States and works with a variety of carrier service plans.
Because it is an application and not running through a browser, it looks and feels like Gmail on the desktop, say officials at Google.
The service is available in the US on phones from Sprint, T-Mobile and Cingular. Google plans to expand Gmail for mobile to other countries and languages.
