Quito (Ecuador): A bus wreck on a winding mountain road killed 47 people on Sunday as the vehicle overturned near the village of Papallacta, 27 miles (45 kilometers) southeast of the capital, police said.
Police spokesman Patricio Quimso said everyone aboard was killed except for five injured children. Three died from their injuries while being rushed to the hospital.
''According to preliminary information, there are 47 dead and five children who survived,'' he told The Associated Press by telephone.
Quimso said the passengers were believed to family members and friends on an all-day outing. He said they were returning to their homes in the community of Amaguana, 10 miles (16 kilometers) south of Quito.
''Due to excess speed, the driver lost control of the bus and it turned over,'' he said.
Jhonny Franco, a Red Cross spokesman, confirmed the number of dead and said the injured children were taken to a hospital in Quito.
