VELLORE: A self-styled broker was chased by a couple who had paid him Rs 1,500 to get a legal heir certificate from the taluk office. When the broker did not deliver the goods as promised, the couple looked for him at the taluk office where an altercation ensued when they found him. Fearing a backlash from people visiting the office, other brokers in the area also ran away from the spot. This created a flutter in Ambur town on Friday.According to sources, Haridas of Kanrampalli village near Ambur had paid Rs 1,500 one year back to Yuvaraj, who had promised to help him get the certificate from the taluk office. It is said that Yuvaraj had dodged Haridas with lame excuses. Annoyed with the delay, Haridas and his wife had gone to the taluk office on Friday to get hold of the broker and upon meeting him demanded either the money back or the certificate. Following a wordy duel, during which Haridas had threatened police action, Yuvaraj ran away with the couple chasing him. However, Yuvaraj managed to escape. The couple later lodged a complaint with the tahsildar who is reported to have promised to process a fresh application from them for the required certificate. Dearth of staff at the newly formed taluk office at Ambur is attributed to the proliferation of middlemen who are trying to exploit villagers who come to the office. Locals demanded action against the brokers and said that interference by brokers in official work had not been objected to by officials, who should taken up the issue.
