KOCHI: It is high time we formulated a vision for our country, which could help the country attain the position of being the third largest economy in terms of GDP, next to the USA and China by the end of the financial year, said Sashi Tharoor MP.He was speaking at the inaugural function of the 70th All India Ophthalmological Conference 2012, held at Hotel Le Meridien here on Thursday.Tharoor noted that in a country where at least 15 million people with visual impairments live, more support programmes should be undertaken for their benefit.“For that we need a vision. What will these people see when they get back their eyesight? Will they see a country which provides them with decent food, shelter and other basic facilities? Hopefully, they will see a country which is working towards providing its citizens with better opportunities for education and jobs. They should be led to believe that they hold an important stake in shaping India’s future. This is the vision I hold for India,” he asserted. At present, the byword in western countries is ‘India-innovation’. In the field of ophthalmology, we may witness an ophtha-innovation, which will open better avenues for the poor and blind, Tharoor said. Around 7,000 ophthalmologists are taking part in the conference.
