KOCHI: Sukumar Azhikode was a man with vast knowledge and could comment thoughtfully on any topic, from philosophy to cricket, veteran writer Chemmanam Chacko, long-time friend of the inspirational orator-critic said at a commemorative meet held by Changampuzha Cultural Centre, Edapally at Changampuzha Park on Tuesday.“He was quick-witted and short-tempered but a loving friend,” he added. Chemmanam also read out from the last letter Azhikode sent him, a few weeks before his demise.“Sukumar Azhikode was a great orator and teacher. Like Socrates, his words were his legacy. He was an unusual saint, above all religions and represented the sentiments of the common man. His legacy should be carried forward for the future generations,” said Fr Paul Thelakkat of Syro Malabar Church, who was a student of Azhikode.“Azhikode was a dynamic speaker who made his presence felt from the very beginning, daring to write boldly very early in his career. ‘Asante Seetha Kavyam’ on Kumaran Asan’s ‘Chintavishtayaaya Seetha’ created ripples in Malayalam literature, by gaining both praise and criticism,” said renowned critic Prof M Thomas Mathew describing Azhikode as a literary critic par-excellence.Eminent personalities like Vice Chancellor of Kerala Kalamandalam KG Paulose, scriptwriter John Paul Puthusery and senior journalist P Rajan, also spoke at the meet.
