CHENNAI: A new slogan, ‘Twinkle twinkle little star, Anna Hazare is the superstar’, rent the air as thousand of supporters stepped out of their houses to express solidarity with the fasting Gandhian for a stronger Jan Lokpal Bill on Sunday.Around 3,000 people, most of them youngsters and members of northern Indian communities, took out a candlelight march for nearly two hours on the Marina beach in the evening. A section of the youth who participated in a bike rally, joined the march at the beach. “We feel proud to be part of the march to put an end to corruption,” said a young couple. Nikita (24), a college student, considered Hazare as the most powerful man in India as he adopted satyagraha method to take on the government. Scores of transgenders also participated in the march. At the fast venue on LB Road, Adyar, youngsters and middle-class people gathered to express solidarity with the 22 satyagrahis on a copycat fast here for the past six days. Six others withdrew the fast following the advise from doctors after they developed symptoms of jaundice, said Bhavana Upadhyaya, an India Against Corruption member.Signer Gayatri Venkataraman visited the venue at Thiruvanmiyur and sang a few songs. Meanwhile, 100 small vendors in Koyambedu tonsured their heads as a mark of protest. “The government is cheating us. We have tonsured to show our protest in support of Anna,” said Murugan, a vendor who along with his family had a tonsure. Another outfit, the Urathasindhanai Association, carried out a signature campaign in support of the Jan Lokpal Bill and held a meet at Devaneya Pavanar Arangam. Participating in the meet, Traffic K R Ramaswamy, Ex-Traffic Warden and social activist, called for a boycott of taxes to the government in protest.
