Chennai: Here's some welcome news for burn victims. With the opening of a skin bank in the city on Wednesday, help is now at hand.

The bank would harvest cadaver skin for use as biological dressing for burn victims, informed Dr S Murugusundaram, director of Chennai Skin Foundation and Yesudian Research Institute.

The skin bank has been set up in association with Eurobank of Netherlands and Dr Dilip Shah of Pune, who was a pioneer in skin banking in India.

Dr Murugusundaram said skin needs to be harvested within six hours of death and can be preserved in glycerol up to a maximum of five years. This would help patients with third-degree burns, he added.

Dr Murugusundaram pointed out there was no specialised centre dedicated to skin in the city despite there being over 600 skin-related diseases.

He said the aim of the Chennai Skin Foundation would be to provide quality and low cost treatment for skin, hair and nail ailments, patient education, awareness and teaching.

The foundation would also offer training programmes for postgraduates and young dermatologists in basic, clinical, procedural and surgical dermatology.
