KOTTAYAM: Highlighting the need to change their approach towards research, Chief Minister Oommen Chandy on Sunday said that mostly the PhD thesis researches carried out at various universities offer little contribution to human knowledge.“The PhDs produce knowledge only within the bounds of established discipline,” Chandy, whose speech was read out at the 24th Kerala Science Congress by V N Rajasekhara Pillai, executive vice-president, Kerala Council for Science, Technology and Environment (KSCSTE), said.“We have to rethink on the stereotypes of the academic environment,” the Chief Minister noted adding that it is high time we attained global standards in researches. He stressed on applied research and development by maintaining a core of basic researchers who could keep track of the developments in science. Appealing to the scientific community to develop environment-friendly and efficient technologies, he said the government was committed to invest more on science education.He said the scientists should work towards the major issues facing the state such as garbage disposal, water shortage and agriculture. The most important issue is finding a clean, dependable, sustainable and affordable sources of energy such as solar power.Disposing of waste has become a real menace and the scientists should find out a workable model suitable for Kerala, he said.The Chief Minister said the plan allocation for Science and Technology in the 12th plan period has been doubled. Apart from taking a decision on the Ramanujam Institute for Basic Science, the government had also given assent to start a Wetland Research Institute in Kottayam.There is urgent need to adopt crop management,crop improvement and crop protection strategies suitable for the climate changes.
