New Delhi: The Centre has disagreed with the Tamil Nadu Government's proposal to use Tamil in Madras High Court. Chief Minister and DMK President M Karunanidhi have dubbed this as ‘discriminatory’.

Karunanidhi said the move has been 'discriminatory" and urged Prime Minister Dr Manmohan Singh to seek President Kalam’s consent to the proposal of introducing Tamil language in High Courts.

Centre had stated on February 27: "The matter was examined in consultation with the Supreme Court and Honourable Chief Justice of India has opined that at present it is not proper to introduce regional languages in the orders, decrees and other proceedings of the High Court."

Karunanidhi said the Centre's stand had come as a "surprise and shock" to all concerned. He added that the reasons cited by the Centre “were not valid” as already four states Bihar, Uttar Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh and Rajasthan had been permitted to use official language of the states as the high court language.

"As per sec 7 of the Official Languages Act, the Governor may authorise the use of Hindi or the official language of the State in addition to English language, for the purpose of any judgement, decree order passed or made by the High Court for the State. Every State in the Union of India has the right to invoke this provision in the use of the official language in the High Court", he said.
