Bhopal: The vibrating condom controversy has reached a crescendo in Madhya Pradesh and so have the sales of the product marketed by public sector unit Hindustan Latex Ltd.
The pack of three condoms that comes in with a vibrating ring has proved to be a hit among consumers who have turned a blind eye to demands for a ban on the product.
"We were selling the condom and the demand rose all of a sudden after the BJP raised a controversy over it. Now it has gone of stock and fresh stocks are not coming,” says a chemist DS Avnani.
The ruling BJP which was vocal in its criticism now seems to be a house divided. The state Public Works Department minister Kailash Vijayvargia has written to Prime Minister Manmohan Singh asking him to convene an all-party meeting on banning the product.
But his leader, MP Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chauhan is silent on this demand. He earlier said his government would take an independent view regardless of what other states felt.
“If it’s something that is not acceptable in our culture, we will take our own decision on it,” Chauhan said.
More than anything else the condom controversy generated by Kailash Vijayvargia in the name of protecting Indian culture is aimed at consolidating his position within the Sangh Parivar.
Initially Chauhan also towed his line and said he would look into the matter. But now better sense seems to have prevailed as it appears the government is not interested in raking up the issue any further.
