New Delhi: The founder of one of the most reputed companies in the world of audio, Dr Fritz Sennheiser passed away on May 17. He was 98.

Sennheiser founded what today we know as Sennheiser electronic GmbH & Co, in 1945. He retired from active management in 1982 handing over the reins to his son Jorg.

Under his guidance the first shotgun microphones and open headphones were created and he oversaw important developments in wireless radio and infra-red transmission.

While Fritz Sennheiser's real passion was for gardens and plants and wanted to become a landscape gardener. But the poor career prospects in depression era Germany led him to follow his "second love," electrical engineering.

The family firm located in Wedemark near Hanover in Germany generated a total sales revenue of over euro 385 million in 2008, with a workforce of more than 2,100 employees.
