MANGALORE: The mercurial BJP leader D V Sadananda Gowda is the second elected representative from this part of the state to become the chief minister.
Gowda, hailing from Mandekolu village in Sullia taluk, graduated in science from St Philomena College in Puttur, and got a degree in law from Udupi Vaikunta Baliga College of Law.In 1976, he started practising law in Sullia and Puttur, and for a brief period had worked as public prosecutor in Sirsi in UK district. Turning to active politics, he resigned from the post later.

About 31 years ago, Gowda became the president of Puttur BMS, and played various roles in the Cooperative Movement. He became president of Sullia BJP unit, and was secretary of the Yuva Morcha from 1983 to 1988.

As an MLA, he held different positions and was nominated as president of the Public Accounts Committee. Then, Gowda defeated M Veerappa Moily in the election to the MangaloreMadiker Parliamentary Constituency by a margin of 32,314 votes.
