THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: There is a lot that a parent of an autistic child needs to know. Right from the child’s health care needs to the privileges and various support systems they have in the society. The State Institute of Educational Management and Training (SIEMAT) has kicked off a management training programme for the parents of autistic children, the first of which was held in the city on Monday. The parent should have a clear idea on the abilities, talents and shortcomings of their children. Autism might be a shortcoming in a child, but such children are usually gifted with one or other special talent too. This should be discovered, in which the parent has a crucial role. ‘’The aim of the training is to help the parents find out the scientific problems faced by their children and to learn skills to manage them. The parents will also be infused with a confidence to deal with the child in the right way,’’ said a press note from SIEMAT. The training will be given in all district centres in two batches. The DIET/BRC and the parents are the only stakeholders in the training programme. The classes will be handled by experts, doctors and DIET faculties. The daily chores, attires, ability to attend to the daily ablutions, exercises, health habits, right dose of medicine intake and all the issues related to the psychological and physical needs of the children would be addressed at the workshops. The workshops would be completed in all districts before the 22nd of this month.
