Mumbai: Mumbai is on the brink of a major power crisis.
CNN-IBN had earlier aired an exclusive report, which has now been confirmed by Maharashtra's Power Minister, Dilip Walse Patil.
Patil says Mumbai will have to cut it's power consumption by 20 per cent from March 1, 2006.
The State government plans to start a campaign for electricity conservation in Mumbai soon.
On Friday, Patil said that he had submitted some proposals to the Maharashtra Electricity regulatory authority.
"Mumbai did not face cuts up till now because demand and supply were equal but now there is a shortfall of about 300MW," he said.
He said that the state government was trying to work out some way by which Mumbai could be saved from power cuts, but admitted in the same breath that with no additional power available, the only way out as of now is to cut consumption.
"We are going to appeal to Mumbai citizens to conserve power. That's the only plan that can work now," said Patil.
