'Virat Can Play for Long Unless His Mind Goes...': Michael Vaughan on What Could Take Kohli Away From Cricket
While Virat Kohli continues to shut down his biggest critics, Michael Vaughan believes one key aspect could take the Indian icon away from cricket.

Questions seem to be floating on the future of Virat Kohli’s cricketing career. While he is 35, he is still fit as a fiddle and can give most youngsters a run for their money on fitness and scoring the big runs with the bat. His 2024 season of the Indian Premier League where he led Royal Challengers Bengaluru to the playoffs is yet another testament to his class. But during the regular season, Kohli has been taking a lot more time away from the ground to support his family. The former England cricketer Michael Vaughan shared his thoughts on what could be the future of Virat Kohli’s cricketing career.

Looking at Kohli’s recent performances, Vaughan reckons that the Indian star could go on to play for quite a long time after looking at his fitness and consistency in scoring the big runs. However, he believes that with the responsibility of having a family, the priorities could change and that could be what takes him away from the sport.

Vaughan said on Cricbuzz, “A brilliant season. You talk about retirement with Virat Kohli, I look at this in a way that he can play for long. He is that fit. Unless his mind goes and he’s obviously got a young family now. In two-three years’ time, everything changes, and he just wants to spend quiet time; I completely get that”.

The former England skipper hinted at Kohli’s withdrawal from the recent Test series against the English side where he believes that Virat is someone who enjoys the subtleties of having a normal life and that could lead him to call time on his career.

“During his time away from the India vs England Test series, I believe he went to London and led a normal life. I’ve read a few of his comments and quotes and he just absolutely adored that normal life. I think that may take Virat away from cricket like he just wants to go and have a quiet time for a while,” Vaughan said.

The former captain however insisted that Kohli is still a force to be reckoned with and credited his ability to evolve as per the demands, particularly in the T20 format where he noted his ability to include the slog-sweep shot into his arsenal to help him in his IPL 2024 season.

“He is a class act. His game is obviously up there with the greats of the game, but the way that he has gone up a gear to stay afloat in this modern era of T20 cricket is exactly what you need. He’s got the game, the mindset, the work ethic that he would have had to put in the nets to work on that sweep shot,” he concluded.

Kohli revealed that he is still as hungry as ever and fans will hope that he continues to play the sport for a long time and end his career on a high. While the IPL 2024 might have ended in yet another heartbreak, he will have his eyes set on the T20 World Cup 2024 that starts in June and will look to get that elusive trophy to add to his cabinet.
