Travis Head and Mitchell Marsh helped Australia create history on Wednesday (September 4) by posting the highest powerplay score ever in T20Is. The duo added 113 runs for the second wicket to help Australia amass a total of 113 runs in the first six overs of the first T20I against Scotland, which was played at the Grange Cricket Club in Edinburgh.
Head was in red-hot form, and he top-scored for the visitors in the series opener by hammering 80 runs from just 25 balls. During his stay at the crease, he hammered 12 fours and five sixes. On the other hand, Marsh scored 39 runs from just 12 balls with the help of five fours and three sixes.
Thanks to their super knocks, Australia chased down the target of 155 runs in just 9.4 overs for the loss of three wickets.
The previous record of highest powerplay score in T20I was held by South Africa, which posted a total of 102 runs against the West Indies during a T20I match played at SuperSport Park in Centurion in 2023.
The overall record for the highest powerplay score in T20s is 125 runs, which was posted by Sunrisers Hyderabad during the IPL 2024 match against Delhi Capitals at Arun Jaitley Stadium in Delhi. In that match as well, Head played a big part for the Pat Cummins-led side.
Debut for JFM
Star Australian batter Jake Fraser-McGurk, who was on fire for the Delhi Capitals in the IPL 2024, made his T20I debut on Wednesday, but he was unable to do much with the bat and was sent back to the dugout for a three-ball duck by Brandon McMullen. However, after his dismissal, Head found an able partner in Marsh, and they both scored runs for fun to completely knock the hosts out of the match.
Mark Watt tried to help his side make a comeback in the match by getting rid of both Marsh and Head in the seventh over of the run chase, but by that time the match was already out of Scotland’s reach.
Earlier, after getting invited to bat first, Scotland managed to post a total of 154 runs for the loss of nine wickets in 20 overs. Opener George Munsey top-scored for the hosts by making 28 runs from 16 balls, and wicketkeeper Matthew Cross made a contribution of 27 runs. For Australia, Sean Abbott picked up three wickets for 39 runs in his quota of four overs, and two Scotland batters each were sent back to the pavilion by Xavier Bartlett and Adam Zampa, who conceded 23 and 33 runs, respectively.
