Former Indian captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni, who is associated with Chennai Super Kings (CSK) in the Indian Premier League (IPL), is still not confirmed to take part in the 2025 edition of the world’s richest franchise cricket league. According to a report in Cricbuzz on Saturday (October 5), the 43-year-old legendary Indian cricketer will meet the CSK officials later this month and convey his final decision.
“Chennai Super Kings continue to maintain that MS Dhoni’s participation in the upcoming season is still not final, and key officials from the franchise will meet with him before making a decision. Dhoni is expected to meet with CSK officials in mid-October in Mumbai, where he will likely convey his final decision,” the report said.
Dhoni, who has led CSK to five IPL titles in the last 17 years, was expected to call time on his IPL career after the conclusion of CSK’s campaign in IPL 2024, but he avoided doing so, and since then there are question marks over his participation in the 2025 edition of IPL.
Dhoni, who was signed by CSK for Rs 6 crore in the IPL 2008 mega auction, is the most capped player in cash-rich league’s history and has scored over 5000 runs. Under his leadership, CSK has played in 10 finals. He stepped down from captaincy ahead of the start of IPL 2024 and passed on the baton to Ruturaj Gaikwad, but the 27-year-old right-handed top-order batter failed to help successfully defend its IPL 2023 title.
Dhoni’s chances of playing in the IPL were boosted after BCCI announced in the new uncapped player rule for IPL 2024 that players like Dhoni, who have not played international cricket for over five years, can be classified as ‘uncapped’ and retained for a price of Rs 4 crore.
Many fans and former greats of the game believed that the uncapped player rule was introduced again to make sure Dhoni’s participation in the IPL 2025, but despite all that, the former Indian skipper, who has won three ICC titles as well, is yet to confirm his participation.
