Manufacturing pushes industrial growth
A strong showing by manufacturing sector offset the slowdown in power generation and mining production.

New Delhi: A strong showing by manufacturing sector offset the slowdown in power generation and mining production to propel industrial growth to 9.7 per cent in August this year as against 7.6 per cent last fiscal.

The industry recorded a yet higher 10.6 per cent growth during the first five months of this fiscal, reflecting a strong improvement over 8.7 per cent in the corresponding period of 2005-06, as per the government data released today.

In August, manufacturing grew by a robust 11.1 per cent as against 8.5 per cent in the same month last year. Mining registered a decline of 0.1 per cent as compared to a negative 2.5 per cent, while power generation increased at a slower rate of 3.7 per cent from 7.9 per cent last fiscal.

On a cumulative basis during April-August 2006-07, manufacturing shot up by an even higher growth rate of 11.8 per cent from 9.6 per cent last fiscal.

Growth in mining sector was also better at 3.1 per cent as against 1.6 per cent in the first five months of 2005-06. Electricity sector posted a growth of 5.7 per cent so far this fiscal, slightly lower than 6.0 per cent in April-August 2005.

As per use-based classification, the consumer durables sector recorded the highest growth of 20.2 per cent in August this year compared to 13.0 per cent last year.

Capital goods sector registered a growth of 14.7 per cent, while consumer goods industry grew by 14.6 per cent and consumer non-durables by 12.6 per cent during the month under review, according to the official data.
