There’s good news and bad news for Chevrolet lovers in the country. The Bad news is that the Multi-Purpose Vehicle (MPV) Chevrolet Spin’s production plans have been shelved. The good news? Instead of the MPV, Chevolet will be rolling out the Beat Activ, which was first showcased as a concept during the Delhi Auto Expo 2016, in February.
General Motors (GM), parent company of Chevrolet, announced the decision following the rising demand for SUVs in India.
"General Motors will not proceed with the Chevrolet Spin MPV in India in 2017. Instead, it will continue to listen to its customers and shift its focus to growing segments, including SUVs," the company said in a statement.
"There was an overwhelming response from our Indian stakeholders to the Beat Activ when we revealed it at the Auto Expo in Delhi. As a soft-roader, the vehicle is ready for any adventure or challenge, while its interior ensures the driver remains comfortable and connected," GM India President and Managing Director Kaher Kazem said.
General Motors India plans to launch at least five new Chevrolet models within the next two years, which includes the new Trailblazer, new Beat, Essentia, new Cruze and Beat Activ.
The decision by GM comes at a time when SUVs are all the craze among Indian buyers, especially the compact SUVs, and when companies with cars like Maruti Suzuki’s Vitara Brezza, Hyundai’s Creta, and Mahindra’s TUV300 and KUV100, it only makes sense that Chevrolet too joins the party.
