Prime Minister Narendra Modi held a bilateral meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin on the sidelines of the BRICS Summit being hosted in Russia's Kazan where India has also opened a Consulate

Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Russian President Vladimir Putin met on the sidelines of the 16th BRICS Summit in Kazan in Russia on Tuesday.

During the meeting, the Russian President made a comment that prompted laughter from everyone in attendance. “We have such a relationship with you that it does not seem that translation will be needed,” Putin said, prompting laughter from PM Modi and others present.

“We consider the cooperation going on between Russia and India very important. Both countries are original member countries of BRICS. There is a special strategic partnership between Russia and India. This relationship will keep growing. Our foreign ministers remain in touch. Our trade is also moving forward. The next meeting will also be held in New Delhi on December 12. We are developing big plans for this upcoming meeting. We welcome your decision to open India’s Consulate in Kazan. India’s diplomatic presence will benefit our cooperation. We are very happy to have you here,” Putin said.

During the meeting, PM Modi said that the Russia-Ukraine conflict should be resolved in a peaceful manner and India is ready to provide all possible cooperation towards it. The prime minister conveyed to the Russian leader that New Delhi “fully supports” the early return of peace and stability in the region.

“We are in constant touch on the issue of ongoing conflict between Russia and Ukraine. As I said earlier, we believe that problems should be resolved in a peaceful manner,” the prime minister said.

“We fully support the early return of peace and stability. All our efforts give priority to humanity. India is ready to provide all possible cooperation in times to come,” he said.

“We have the opportunity to discuss all these issues,” he added.

The prime minister also referred to his summit talks with Putin in Moscow in July.

Our annual summit resulted in strengthening cooperation in every field, he said.

The prime minister congratulated Putin on Russia’s successful presidency of BRICS and said many countries want to join the grouping now.
