Congress leader Rahul Gandhi faced intense protests by Khalistan proponents in the United Kingdom, sources told CNN-News18 on Friday.
Gandhi paused his Bharat Jodo Nyay Yatra ahead of this year’s Lok Sabha elections and headed to the UK to deliver lectures at the University of Cambridge.
The Wayanad MP is a Visiting Fellow of the Cambridge Judge Business School. He was a student of Trinity College of the University of Cambridge and was awarded the MPhil in Development Studies in 1995.
According to sources, the Congress leader was targeted by Khalistani protesters during his interaction at the Judge Business School. He was able to leave only after the intervention of local authorities, they added.
Cambridge University Police did not allow the pro-Khalistan Sikhs to enter the Judge Business School, the sources said.
According to them, Paramjit Singh Pamma, a designated terrorist and coordinator of the Sikhs for Justice (SFJ) outfit in Europe, was leading this protest against Rahul Gandhi.
The protesters blamed the Gandhi clan for the 1984 anti-Sikh riots and the Amritsar killings, said the sources. Sikhs will continue to challenge Rahul Gandhi during his foreign visits, they said.
Rahul Gandhi was later escorted out of Cambridge University by UK Police under security cover, the sources said.
