Red ant chutney or Chapda chutney is one of the most popular foods in Chhattisgarh’s Bastar region.

India is a country of diversity. From rich culture to diverse landscapes, you will get to see the beauty of this country in every kilometre. You will get to see a lot of variety in food in different states and their different districts. But have you heard of a unique dish called red ant chutney? Yes, you heard it right. Ants are the creatures that can leave you writhing in pain — can they be served as a dish? Red ant chutney or Chapda chutney is one of the most popular foods in Chhattisgarh’s Bastar region. It is referred to as Chaprah there. Chaprah means leaf basket and is referred to as nests that ants make using the leaves of the Sal tree.

A person named Rishi Praveen shared the whole recipe of red ant chutney on his Instagram handle, which is currently garnering everyone’s attention.

This video is from Jagdalpur, Chhattisgarh. In the clip, a woman is seen making a red-ant chutney.

Praveen, who claims himself as a content creator, shared in this video that people make red ant chutney in Bastar and eat it with great enthusiasm. In this video, a woman first collects ants and their eggs. After that, she grinds onion, chilli, and garlic. Lastly, she mixes live ants in it and grinds it once again. While collecting ants, the woman is also seen eating raw ants. After grinding the chutney properly, the woman and a small child are also seen eating it. It is said in the video that eating this chutney provides a lot of relief from fever.

This video went viral in no time. While many people have expressed their reactions by commenting, some were disgusted after watching this video. One said that he is proud that he is a vegetarian. Another said, “Even chicken and mutton were fine, but this!” “The red ants are worse than black ants, and no one likes red ants, but they should not be tortured so badly,” added the third user.
