A couple in Maryland, USA, were in for a pleasant shock recently when they won a lottery worth a whopping $2 million after unknowingly buying two identical tickets for the same Powerball draw. The couple was elated after their win and couldn’t believe their luck.
The husband revealed that he went to a 7-Eleven store on Bestgate Road and used the lottery terminal’s replay feature. He added that he used that feature to scan old tickets for winners so that he could print new tickets with the same number. He didn’t realise at the time that some of his tickets had matching numbers, creating duplicates of the tickets.
After some time, 7-Eleven announced that they had sold two $1 million tickets. Upon hearing this, the couple started to check the numbers on their tickets. Initially, they found many $4 winning tickets, then they found a ticket that had the same first five Powerball numbers that matched the $1 million number. The couple was elated and shared the moment with a celebratory cry.
But their good news wasn’t over yet. After celebrating the moment over a phone call, the husband said, “I still have tickets to go through. What if I have the second million-dollar ticket?” His wife quickly went on to inspect the other lot of tickets and found that they had another ticket with the same winning number, doubling their winnings to a staggering $2 million. The couple was overjoyed with their win and planned to invest their money. They have also chosen to keep their identities anonymous.
As per the lottery website, this is the first Powerball jackpot lottery since January 1. The last hit was when a person won $842.4 million in Michigan, USA.
