The world is full of incredible places that often leave us amazed, and one such unique marvel has recently captivated the internet: a musical road in Japan. It may sound unusual, but a travel vlogger named Gaurav Sharma captured this fascinating phenomenon during his trip to Japan. On this road, vehicles create music as they pass over specially designed bumpers, turning a simple drive into a musical experience
In a video posted on Instagram, Gaurav Sharma demonstrates how vehicles passing over a road in Japan create a melody. He starts by explaining that he is on Melody Road, where driving at speeds over 50 km/h triggers the road to play tunes. While on a bike, he noticed the music wasn’t as audible but then he showed a car, which “acts like a soundboard,” passing through the road and playing the melody beautifully. He excitedly called this experience “crazy.”
The caption shared along the footage read, “Melody Roads of Japan. There are more than 30 Melody roads spread across Japan. A patented technology, the roads are carved in a way that you hear music when you drive over them. This is due to the vibrations produced by the vehicles as the vehicle acts like a soundboard. The music played ranges from kids school songs to music from popular anime series.”

Since being posted online, the video has propelled to fame, accumulating over 4 lakh views. The comment section buzzed with a flurry of reactions from social media users.
A user pointed out, “This is created due to minimize the overspeeding of cars. Outcome is reduced by a good amount of road accidents.”
Another remarked, “Japan is super cool.”
A different perspective was shared by a user who wrote, “Waste of resource, sound pollution, slow down the vehicle. Totally unnecessary.”
Many compared the idea of such roads being built in India, sparking hilarious reactions.
One individual wrote, “Here no need for melody there will always be some kind of loudspeaker everywhere,” while another chimed in with, “Inke road pe gaane baj rehe hai aur yaha to road hee gayab hai (On their road, music is playing and here, the road is barely visible).”
A person quipped, “Kuch sunai nahi diya! Indian roads k potholes me to issey zyada melody bajti hain (Couldn’t hear anything. The potholes on Indian roads play more melody than this).”
In Japan, several musical roads are scattered across the country, each designed to produce music through a system of grooves cut into the road surface. As vehicles drive over these grooves, the vibrations create melodies, providing an unforgettable experience for travellers.
