The residents of a girls’ hostel at Osmania University in Hyderabad staged a protest in front of the Ladies Hostel Complex over alleged insect-infested food served in the hostel. The hostel residents claimed that they have been complaining about the contaminated food for the past three months but the authorities have failed to improve the food or take any action against the offenders.
The students also mentioned that as a result of eating the unhygienic hostel food, many students fell sick and experienced stomach-related health issues. As a mark of their protest, the students sat out the Ladies Hostel Complex with empty plates.

This is not the only incident where a higher education institute was accused of endangering the lives of students by serving unhygienic food in a hostel mess.
In September last year, KIT Bhubaneswar hostel came under fire come under fire for reportedly serving food with a dead frog in it. On September 23, an X user shared an incriminating photo of a dead front alongside the hostel mess’s food plate and wrote, “This is KIT Bhubaneswar, ranked ~42 among engineering colleges in India, where parents pay approx 17.5 lakhs to get their child an engineering degree. This is the food being served at the college hostel. Then we wonder why students from India migrate to other countries for better education and facilities.”

A day later the student shared a photo of a notice that the hostel issued to the caterer. As per the notice, only one day’s payment of the mess contract was deducted. The notice also warned the caterer against repeating such incidents and said, “Further, you are WARNED to be very much careful while preparing food for the boarders of your allotted hostels. You are again instructed to keep your kitchen, store and food quality hygienic.”
