In a shocking incident from North Miami Beach, Florida, an elderly man found himself in grave danger after receiving a postcard from a woman he had dated six decades ago, triggering a violent attack from his wife. Bertha Yalter, aged 71, was arrested after police responded to a distress call from the couple’s residence in the Eastern Shores neighbourhood.
Upon arrival, law enforcement found the husband in a state of ‘extreme fragility,’ bearing severe bruises, open lacerations and bleeding bite marks, as detailed in an arrest report obtained by WTVJ. The victim’s condition indicated a brutal assault, allegedly perpetrated by his wife in a fit of rage.
The complaint stated that the attack was instigated by the arrival of a postcard from the husband’s former flame from the 1960s, although the exact contents of the postcard remain undisclosed. Angered by the correspondence, Ms. Yalter purportedly attempted to suffocate her husband with a pillow, prompting the emergency call.
The North Miami Beach Police Department revealed that the couple had been married for over five decades, further complicating the already perplexing case. Detectives reviewed video footage from a cell phone, which provided corroborative evidence supporting the victim’s account of the assault. Additionally, prosecutors asserted that Ms. Yalter confessed to confiscating her husband’s phone during the altercation.
A police report obtained by WTVT in Tampa disclosed Ms. Yalter’s admission of guilt when questioned by authorities. Consequently, she faced multiple charges, including aggravated violence against an older person, second-degree attempted murder and tampering with a witness or victim. Furthermore, she was ordered to sever all contact with her spouse, emphasising the severity of the allegations.
Her attorney denounced the attempted murder charge as ‘absurd,’ advocating for a fair legal proceeding for the 71-year-old defendant. The harrowing ordeal serves as a stark reminder of the complexities and dangers that can emerge within intimate relationships, even after decades of marriage.
