Staying fit requires strict dietary restrictions, dedicated workout routines, and good lifestyle choices. While people in their youth and middle age manage to hit the gym regularly, it is nearly impossible for a woman in her 80s to retain her fitness as the body’s metabolism slows down with age. While most individuals, in their old age, opt to slow down on their physical activities, an old woman chose to make a fitness statement by participating in a deadlifting contest at the age of 82.

Inspired by her grandsons, Kittammal proved that age is just a number when she secured the 5th spot at the ‘Strong Man of South India’ contest held in Kuniyamuthur last week. She competed with 17 women during the contest and all of them were below their 30s. The woman, who is a resident of Pollachi, Tamil Nadu, lives with her husband. They are accompanied by their grandson, S Rohith. The 16-year-old boy, due to his keen interest in powerlifting, has been practising for it for over 6 months.

The elder couple’s other grandson, S Rithik, is also a national-level powerlifting champion. Kittammal embarked on the powerlifting journey after Rithik took him to a gym when she visited him at his parents’ house in Tirupur district.

Talking about her fitness journey, the 82-year-old woman told the Times Of India, “I am used to regularly lifting 25kg rice bags and fetching at least 25 pots of drinking water. I am very active, and do not feel very old. Over the last few months, I started trying to lift minimum weights with my grandson Rohith and then gradually increased the weight.”

Although Kittammal began her inspiring journey at the age of 82, she has been a fitness enthusiast ever since her childhood. Her diet included a healthy porridge prepared using finger millet, pearl millet, eggs, moringa soup, and boiled vegetables. Now, the grandmother of two kids is hoping to compete in more contests and wants to participate in national and state-level deadlifting competitions.
