New Delhi: WhatsApp has cleared the rumours about a 'lifetime ban' from its service if users violated its policy and used a third-party app. The company said that it will only deny access to account holders till the time they have unofficial, third-party apps installed in their devices.
After third-party WhatsApp client apps surfaced on the web, the Facebook-owned company began its crackdown and started issuing affected users 24-hour 'temporary' bans complete with countdown timer.
However, a third-party app, WhatsApp+, developer posted on Google+ that WhatsApp had started a permanent account disable. That post fuelled confusion about WhatsApp's policy on third-party clients.
WhatsApp has explained that its previous policy still stands which requires the users to uninstall offending apps and then download the authorized version of WhatsApp from the app store to be able to get back to the service. If a user doesn't uninstall WhatsApp+ or any such third-party app, then they will continue to be banned until they stop using it, a TechCrunch report said.
The company further said that the reason for its crackdown on third-party apps was related to security and privacy. It simply can't guarantee such apps are safe, given that WhatsApp doesn't control their source code.
Some of the third-party apps include, WhatsApp+, WhatsApp Reborn and OgWhatsapp. Those who have been using any of these or other third-party client from their smartphone, they'll be able to use the official WhatsApp app only when they uninstall these apps. Their account and associated phone number is not 'permanently' banned or 'banned for life' from WhatsApp itself.
