Twenty long years ago when Videsh Sanchar Nigam Limited (VSNL) first let the Indian public connect to the Internet, it came in a variety of connectivity options. The promised speed ranged from a 9.6 kbps on dial-up to 128 kbps on the premium leased lines. While the base rates were relatively lower, it allowed only very basic shell access.
