The new Google phones are also expected to bring in additional software and interface changes atop stock Android.

New Delhi: As with every new Nexus device release, this time the surprise is not the manufacturer but the nomenclature. Google is expected to do away with the 'Nexus' branding for something more Google, like a 'G' logo.

According to Android Central, the upcoming HTC-manufactured Google smartphones will instead be marketed under a different name, breaking away from the flagship title of 'Nexus' from last six years.

However, the big change doesn't end at that. The new Google phones are also expected to bring in additional software and interface changes atop stock Android.

Given the focus on Google-centric branding, this will bring a notable difference in the new phones in terms of software experience from the predecessors.

The decision to tweak the software falls in line with Google CEO Sundar Pichai's remark at the Recode Code Conference in June, "You’ll see us hopefully add more features on top of Android on Nexus phones. There’s a lot of software innovation to be had."

In all likelihood, the new Google phones, which are rumoured to be codenamed 'Marlin' and 'Sailfish', could come with a special version of Android Nougat as opposed to the standard 'Vanilla' version shipped on the past Nexus phones.
