Chalakudy: If huge crowds are anything to go by, then veteran Malayalee actor Innocent could be a front-runner in the upcoming Lok Sabha elections. Innocent is the Independent candidate from Chalakudy, supported by the Left. The actor-turned-politician has been inspired by his recent battle with cancer, to work for the common man.
"After being treated for the disease, I am now scared of nothing. From the film industry I have made enough money and there is no need to amass wealth from politics. I am confident I can work with the people and fight against the evils of corruption," says the actor who has acted in hundreds of movies.
But it is not going to be an easy road for him. Apart from the fact that Chalakudy is a bastion of the Congress-led-United Democratic Front, Innocent will be taking on seasoned politician PC Chacko.
The UDF is centering their campaign around the secular agenda and developmental initiatives of the UPA government. Chacko said, "Nationally we see that our chances our increasing day by day. On the other side Modi started from top and is coming down and our Rahul Ji has become a very practical politician."
Chacko though, is facing a fair share of criticism. Local resident Subran says, "PC Chacko had earlier also represented this constituency but had done nothing much. He is the sitting MP of Thrissur, but will not contest from there as he knows that the people are not happy with him."
Kerala has not been very receptive to stars who cross from across the silver screen to politics. It is to be seen if Innocent could change the fortunes of Malayalee actors entering politics.
