New Delhi: UP Congress chief Rita Bahuguna Joshi, who was arrested for allegedly making derogatory remarks against Chief Minister Mayawati, was on Thursday remanded to 14 days judicial custody. Joshi was produced before the Chief Judicial Magistrate Prashant Kumar.
Joshi’s arrest led to an instant uproar in both the Houses of Parliament.
Members voiced apprehension over the threat to the life of Joshi and demanded punishment for the accused. The Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha were finally adjourned for the day on Thursday afternoon.
The UP Congress chief, who allegedly made some derogatory remarks against Mayawati at a public meeting, was arrested in Ghaziabad on Wednesday night while she was on her way to Delhi.
Meanwhile, Joshi said her speech was taken in a “different context.”
“I have put focus on a CM who has no sympathy for women. But I regret what I said in a fit of anger,” she said.
Joshi has been booked under 153 A (delivering inflammatory speeches) and section 109 of IPC (using abusive language) besides under provisions of SC/ST Atrocities Prevention Act, Additional Director General of Police Brij Lal said.
The court refused the bail application of the UP Congress chief and directed that she be kept in the women’s cell of Moradabad's district jail.
Joshi's house on Lal Bahadur Shastri Marg in a high security zone, a stone's throw from the Chief Minister's secretariat, in Lucknow, was attacked last night by alleged BSP activists.
