Showdown between Governor, Speaker in K'taka
The Karnataka political drama has deepened with Governor H.R. Bhardwaj now asking Speaker K.G. Bopaiah not to disqualify any MLA before the trust vote takes place on Monday.

Bangalore: The political drama that is being played out in Karnataka - the crisis for the BJP-led government in the state - has deepened with Karnataka Governor H.R. Bhardwaj now asking Speaker K.G. Bopaiah not to disqualify any MLA before the trust vote takes place on Monday.

It all started with Bhardwaj writing to Bopaiah asking him not to disqualify any MLA before the trust vote on Monday and to maintain the strength of the house as on October 6. This means that Bhardwaj has essentially asked him not to disqualify any house member before the trust vote takes place.

Sources say this is because the Speaker was planning to disqualify some Oppositon MLAs under the anti-defection law. K.G. Bopaiah has now written back to Bhardwaj saying that the Governor cannot intervene in the functioning of the Speaker.

Meanwhile, taking on the Karnataka Governor, BJP, on Sunday accused H.R. Bhardwaj of being a "willing partner" in the Opposition’s move to destabilise its government and charged him with acting at the behest of the Congress.

Taking strong exception to the Governor's "threatening letter" to Speaker K.G. Bopaiah, senior BJP leader M Venkaiah Naidu said he was shocked to know that Bhardwaj was "stoopingdown to the level of a politician".

Senior BJP leader Sushma Swaraj has also released a statement demanding the recall of Governor H.R. Bhardwaj.
