While thousands are believed to have died in Uttarakhand, over 5,000 people are still missing.
New Delhi: Prime Minister Manmohan Singh cancelled the Iftaar party to be hosted by him in the wake of the Uttarakhand tragedy that left many dead and thousands missing. Manmohan Singh hosts the Iftaar dinner every year during the month of Ramzaan.
Heavy rains struck Uttarakhand last moth resulting in flash floods. Many areas in the state were also hit by cloudbursts.
While thousands are believed to have died, over 5,000 people are still missing. The rescue operations in the state are over, but the official death toll is yet to be ascertained as some bodies are believed to be trapped under debris.
