New Delhi: BJP National General Secretary Gopinath Munde has resigned from the party post.

Munde said he was upset with the party’s choice of Madhu Chavan to head its Mumbai unit.

He sent his resignation to party President Rajnath Singh.

Munde, who is a former deputy chief minister of Maharashtra, said, “I have resigned from all party posts. I want to function as an ordinary party-worker.

“After the meeting at Vidhan Sabha, I will tour all the districts and meet other workers and listen to what they have to tell me,” he added.

The party has, however, gone into damage control mode.

Maharashtra BJP chief Nitin Gadkari says Chavan won't be appointed Mumbai unit if Munde doesn't want him there and asked Munde to withdraw his resignation.

The party's central leadership, too, has made it clear that it won't accept Munde's resignation.

"We have not received any resignation. Even if we receive, it we won’t accept it," stated BJP leader Arun Jaitley.

State leaders also say Munde may withdraw his resignation by Monday morning.

Chavan is believed to be from the Nitin Gadkari group, which is supposed to be a rival of the Munde camp.
