Maharashtra govt asks Raj Thackeray to behave, again
MNS chief asks schools to make Marathi compulsory, warns media too.

Mumbai: Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS) chief Raj Thackeray’s “threat” to schools will not be tolerated and nobody will be allowed to "run a parallel government", said Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister R R Patil on Monday.

Patil said this after Thackeray asked English medium schools in the state to compulsorily teach Marathi from Class I and shop owners to put up Marathi nameplates. "Nobody will be allowed to operate a parallel government," said Patil about Raj's statement.

"Giving a memorandum is one thing but issuing veiled threats is another", Patil said. The state government will come out with a legislation providing for stringent monetary fine and jail term for those involved in attacks on the media, medical practitioners and government officials, said Patil, who is also the Home Minister.

Thackeray on Monday held a press conference where he asked the media not to call Mumbai as Bombay. He named a national English daily, which carried an article on Monday calling Mumbai as Bombay.

"When the media can call other cities by their official names, like in case of Bengaluru, why not use the same yardstick for Mumbai and stop calling it Bombay," he said.

Thackeray expected shop owners to implement his Marathi signboard direction within a month, but said English schools would need more time. He asked Marathi officials to stop issuing bogus domicile certificates and driving licences to “outsiders”.

"I will contact the people concerned after a month. If no action is taken from their end, MNS will undertake the job of maintaining law and order," Raj said.

The MNS leader created new in Jamshedpur, Jharkhand, where a court issued a non-bailable warrant against him for failing to appear before it in a case regarding his alleged derogatory remarks on 'chat festival'.
