Salem: Tamil Nadu Chief Minister and DMK chief M Karunanidhi on Friday slammed the police for withdrawing the security provided at the house of his son and Union Chemicals and Fertilisers Minister M K Alagiri in Madurai.

Though the security, which was withdrawn on Thursday, was restored early this morning following strong reaction from ruling DMK and Alagiri, the Chief Minister slammed the police at a campaign meeting in Salem.

“Who has given the powers to withdraw police bandobast to Alagiri,” he said, adding that his party knew “who was behind” the move.

“For meetings of Opposition leaders, 100 to 200 policemen were deployed for their security. But you can see how many policemen have been deployed for this meeting,” the DMK chief said.

Karunanidhi claimed it had only been during DMK’s rule that the salary of policemen had been hiked three times and other benefits extended to them. But they rigidly insisted on issuing in and out passes to visitors to his house, thereby inconveniencing visitors, he alleged.

Claiming that he would return to power in Tamil Nadu after the April 13 elections, he said, ” I won’t take any revenge on the police officials”.

Karunanidhi repeated his allegation that the restrictions imposed by the Election Commission amounted to an “undeclared emergency” being implemented in the state.

Recalling the developmental work done in the state by DMK, Karunanidhi said about Rs five crore had been spent on a nine-stage beautification of the Manimutharu river running through Salem city in 1996-2001, when DMK was in power. However, the project was dropped when AIADMK came to power in

2001, he alleged.

“In the past five years of DMK rule, about Rs 31.5 crore has been spent on beautifying the river,” he said.

Denouncing opinion polls that claim DMK will not come to power in Tamil Nadu, Karunanidhi said, “The public knows who will come to power just like in the 2009 Lok Sabha elections.”
