New Delhi: It was perhaps the murder most foul of the year gone by. And now it seems the judgement day is fast approaching in the Pramod Mahajan murder case.
The prosecution handling the case of the BJP leader’s killing, on Wednesday, submitted the final article of evidence, thereby setting the stage for the framing of charges against Mahajan’s brother Pravin Mahajan.
Special public prosecutor Ujjwal Nikam – who was also the prosecutor in the 1993 Mumbai blasts case - submitted to a Mumbai court a CD allegedly containing footage shot at the Worli police station after Pravin surrendered himself with his licensed revolver after shooting his brother.
The court declared that the process of framing charges against Pravin would begin on January 23 as the defence and prosecution submit their arguments.
Pravin Mahajan had allegedly entered Pramod Mahajan's Worli residence on April 22, 2006, armed with a licensed revolver, and after a brief altercation, shot him.
He then went to the nearby Worli Police Station and surrendered himself.
The BJP leader was rushed to the city’s Hinduja Hospital and succumbed to his injuries on May 3, 2006, after nearly 10 days of intense media glare.
In a statement given to the police later, Pravin had said that he was upset that by the way he was being treated and sidelined by the more powerful elder brother, and therefore shot him in a fit of rage.
The police filed their chargesheet against Pravin on July 14 in which they charged him with murder and other sections of the IPC.
