New Delhi: Maharashtra government has directed the police to take permission from the law officer before registered any FIR under the Information Technology (IT) Act. Maharashtra Home Minister RR Patil made the announcement following nation-wide uproar over the arrest of two girls for a Facebook post. Even the NCP is in the mood to target Patil for the girls' arrest.
Patil's declaration that the police won't be able to register an FIR without the law officer's permission would come as a huge reprieve for the users of social networking websites.
The direction comes after a 21-year-old girl, who posted comments against Shiv Sena founder Bal Thackeray on social networking website Facebook, was arrested by the police. A friend of the girl was also arrested for liking the anti-Thackeray comment by the police in connection with the case.
However, the girl and her friend were later released on bail after they were produced before a local court. The girl hails from Palghar in Thane district of Maharashtra.
A clinic belonging to the girl's uncle was vandalised by Shiv Sainiks who took offence to the girl's Facebook update. While the girl was summoned to the police station and arrested after questioning, the police have only registered an FIR against unknown people for vandalising the hospital.
Meanwhile, fearing for their safety, the girls apologised for the status and the girl who had posted it deactivated her account saying that she feared for her family's safety.
