New Delhi: The fast carried out by Gujarat Congress party leader Shankarsinh Vaghela to counter Narendra Modi's fast enters it's second day on Sunday. The fast launched at Sabarmati Asharam, however, has more or less been low profile with senior Congress leaders abstaining from the event.
Vaghela along with Gujarat Congress leader Arjun Modhwadia began their fast as a counter to Modi's three-day fast, calling it a Satyagraha against corruption.
Accusing Modi for wasting the taxpayers' money, Vaghela said, "The government is corrupt and public money is being wasted. Funds are not utilised constructively."
Earlier on Saturday, Modhwadia also slammed Modi saying, "What is the need for Modi to spend taxpayers' money to hold a lavish fast? He could have held his fast at the CM's residence as well. The Modi government is corrupt, and is facing many corruption allegations."
The Congress leaders launched their fast an hour before Modi's fast which began at around 10 AM. The Congress has dubbed Modi's fast as "five star" as it being held in an air-conditioned hall.
The Gujarat Chief Minister announced his fast after a Supreme Court order, which he interpreted as a clean chit to him in a post-Godhra riots case, Vaghela said.
"Now, he wants to project himself as a messiah of the minorities by undertaking such a fast and wants to show that he is their protector." Vaghela also said that words like peace and harmony don't suit Modi.
