Chhattisgarh's Modi: BJP banks on Raman Singh
Raman Singh is BJP's star campaigner and development is his plank.

Rajnandgaon (Chhattisgarh): Chhattisgarh's Chief Minister Raman Singh has modelled himself on Gujarat's Narendra Modi.

Singh is an ayurvedic doctor and BJP's star campaigner in the upcoming elections with development being his poll plank.

He's made a habit of changing his seat every five years is contesting from Rajnandgaon this time while he tours the state, his wife Veena Singh looks after his constituency, reaching out to everybody, especially women

“Our workers are organised. We don't have to do much I'm there so that they are assured that some one is there. That's it,” says Veena.

In Chhatisgarh, running away from one's seat is not really political cowardice. Even in Rajnandgaon it's okay for the busy chief minister to stay away during campaigning.

They understand he has to shoulder many responsibilities.

Of course, the Congress opponent and sitting MLA Udai Mudliar thinks the candidate's absence is an issue. He underlines that aspect during his low key campaigning

"I'm not fighting the chief minister. I'm fighting the BJP. They have not done anything for the state. Lat time when the BJP won the state I won here. I will win again,” he says.

Development is not an easy plank to counter charges of anti-incumbency. Raman Singh knows that his wife and party workers will bail him out in Rajnandgaon especially with its high percentage of woman voters.

But he'll need a lot of help from the likes of Narendra Modi to sail through in the rest of state and he's leaving no stone unturned.

For Raman Singh, Rajnandgaon is the safest bet. His opponent Udai Mudliar won the seat last time by 40 votes and though the BJP was in power here in Rajnandgaon, Mudliar is facing the anti-establishment factor.
