New Delhi: In a brazen incident, Deputy Leader of Congress in Rajya Sabha Anand Sharma on Saturday was allegedly attacked by ABVP activists in JNU campus.
Sources said, he was attacked on ears with sharp object when he was returning with Congress vice president Rahul Gandhi from JNU.
"My left ear was bleeding following the attack,” Sharma alleged.
Both Rahul and Sharma went to JNU to attend a protest meet held by students against the arrest of JNUSU president Kanhaiya Kumar on sedition charges.
Sharma claimed that the ‘attack’ took place close to the protest meet point inside the university campus. He alleged that ABVP activists attacked him using cover of the darkness.
“The SPG took Rahul Gandhi away in an alternate vehicle as the alleged attackers had surrounded the vehicle of the Congress Vice President as well,” he added.
Criticisng the incident, Congress spokesperson Randeep Surjewala said, "Today is a black day for India's democracy. Anand Sharma was publicly attacked by government protected ABVP goons in JNU campus."
Later a complaint was lodged with the Delhi police.
In the evening, Gandhi visited the JNU campus and slammed the NDA government for selective arrests.
His visit to the university came a day after the arrest of JNUSU president Kanhaiya Kumar in a sedition case.
Kanhaiya was arrested after he was reportedly found associated with an event in JNU campus where they condemned Afzal Guru's hanging.
He was shown black flags by the ABVP supporters in the campus for speaking against the arrest.
Hinting towards ABVP, Gandhi said, "Those who showed black flags on my face, I feel proud that in my country they have the right to show black flags."
