Chennai: Criticising the AIADMK government for detaining some of his partymen in alleged land grab cases, DMK chief M Karunanidhi on Saturday said the ruling party's intentions of running the state "on the basis of intimidation" would only result in "disappointment".
"If they (AIADMK) believe that they can give a go by to free thought, fearless exchange of thoughts, discussion and consultation and intend to rule in a dictatorial manner by maintaining a sense of tension, the rulers will only be left with disappointment," the DMK patriarch wrote in party mouthpiece 'Murasoli'.
He recalled the words of DMK founder and former chief minister CN Annadurai and said "more the rope is twisted, it severs", hinting that the "intimidatory" tactics would not yield result.
Referring to the detention of some of the DMK men arrested under Goondas Act for alleged landgrab, such as former MLA Ranganathan, Karunanidhi said that this provision was introduced by AIADMK founder MG Ramachandran when he was Chief Minister in 1982.
"Persons causing disturbance to law and order, those indulging in flesh trade, kidnap and illicit liquor can be detained under this and cannot seek bail immediately. They have to remain in prison for one year. In the first 100 days of the AIADMK rule, 323 persons have been detained under Goondas Act," he said.
The 88-year-old leader alleged that the detention of so many persons under the Act must have been possible only if there was a sudden spurt in incidents of crime or that the Act must have been "misused" to make persons "obey" the rulers.
