THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The suicide of a Dalit youth at Vithura here following alleged police torture saw the Opposition going into attack mode in the Assembly on Thursday morning. The Opposition members strode out in protest after permission was denied for adjourning the House to discuss the incident. Chief Minister Oommen Chandy said that the cause of the suicide would be investigated. The government will also examine the demand that the family of Sinu, the youth, be provided financial assistance. “Autopsy showed hanging as the cause of death. But the reasons that led to it will be investigated,’’ the Chief Minister said. Koliyakode Krishnan Nair, who sought leave for the adjournment motion, demanded that a case for murder should be filed against the policemen. Sinu was not drunk when he was arrested as alleged, Krishnan Nair said, demanding that the government should pay a compensation of Rs 10 lakh to the family.Opposition Deputy Leader Kodiyeri Balakrishnan charged that the UDF Government had let loose the police upon the people. Lockups in Kerala have become centres for torture, he said.
