New Delhi: The row between Delhi Law Minister Somnath Bharti and the police has taken such an ugly turn that the Arvind Kejriwal government and its supporters are out on the streets protesting against the Centre and the Delhi Police.
It all started when the police defied Bharti during a midnight raid in Khirki village by not arresting Ugandan women whom the minister accused of being involved in prostitution and drug trafficking. The Kejriwal government demanded the suspension of the policemen and raised the matter with Lieutenant Governor Najeeb Jung and Home Minister Sushil Kumar Shinde.
The Lieutenant Governor had assured a judicial enquiry in the matter. Meanwhile, the police presented their side of the story and Delhi Commissioner BS Bassi backed his officers.
Although Ugandan women alleged that they were manhandled by the minister and his men, Kejriwal openly defended the midnight raid and backed his minister.
The protest which began on Monday saw his ministers also joining him. He later asked the people to join him. The Chief Minister along with his supporters even slept on the street outside the Rail Bhawan.
As the day progressed, the number swelled. So did the demands. The protest which demanded the suspension of policemen for defying Bharti's order is now demanding that the police be put under the Delhi government.
Later Kejriwal also warned that his party would disrupt the Republic Day celebrations.
With just four days left for Republic Day, Kejriwal has threatened to derail the celebrations if his demands are not met. The protest which started outside the Home Ministry has now reached Raisina Hills.
Only time will tell if it is Kejriwal who will bow down first or the Centre.
