An eight-member Indian contingent will compete in the squash events at the 2023 Asian Games. Squash at the Hangzhou Games will begin with team events on September 26, while the singles and mixed doubles are scheduled to be held from October 1 to October 5. This is the first time that the squash mixed doubles event is being hosted at the Asian Games. The other squash events in Hangzhou include singles and teams in both men’s and women’s categories. The squash events at the 2023 Asian Games will take place at the Hangzhou Olympic Sports Centre Squash Court.
The Indian squash team in Hangzhou will be led by Dipika Pallikal, the reigning champions in women’s and mixed doubles. Dipika secured a bronze in women’s singles at the previous Asiad. However, the 31-year-old has not featured in any singles competition since 2019. Dipika will compete in the mixed doubles at the Hangzhou Games, pairing up with Harinderpal Singh Sandhu. The duo clinched the Asian mixed doubles squash championship in China earlier in June and will look to replicate the feat in the Asiad.
India won five medals including one silver and four bronze at the previous Jakarta Games. Joshna Chinappa and Saurav Ghosal, who secured bronze in women’s and men’s singles, are set to represent the country in Hangzhou. A 15-year-old Anahat Singh, who is the reigning under-17 Asian champion has made the cut to the Asian Games squad.
Saurav Ghosal, Mahesh Mangaonkar and Harinderpal Singh Sandhu, who were part of India’s gold-medalist team at the 2014 Asian Games, will also be seen in action in Hangzhou. Since squash was inducted in the Asian Games, India have won one gold, two silver ad three bronze medals in the sport.
