Trinamool Congress MP Mahua Moitra, who is currently being investigated for accepting bribes in exchange for asking questions in the parliament, was appointed as the party’s district president of Krishnanagar (Nadia North) on Monday.
Taking to X, formerly known as Twitter, Moitra thanked the party and Trinamool Congress Chief Mamata Banerjee for her new role and assured her that she would work in the best interest of her party and Krishnagar.
Thank you @MamataOfficial and @AITCofficial for appointing me District President of Krishnanagar (Nadia North) .Will always work with the party for the people of Krishnanagar.— Mahua Moitra (@MahuaMoitra) November 13, 2023
Mahua’s appointment comes at a time when the Lok Sabha Ethics Panel that is probing TMC MP’s role in the case has sought the expulsion of Moitra. The committee on Thursday adopted a report on the case after two hearings.
The inquiry was triggered after BJP MP Nishikant Dubey filed a complaint in Lok Sabha alleging that Moitra sought favours from businessman Darshan Hiranandani to ask questions against industrialist Gautam Adani and Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
The committee also recommended an ‘intense, legal, institutional inquiry’ by the government in a time-bound manner given the ‘highly objectionable, unethical, heinous and criminal conduct’ by her.
Ethics Committee chairman Vinod Sonkar told CNN-News 18, “Report is adopted. Some members tried to save her but the majority was in favour of adopting the report. Now the report is being sent to Lok Sabha Speaker.”
Sonkar said six members voted in favour and four members were against the recommendation of Moitra’s expulsion from Lok Sabha.
In her first reaction after the panel’s recommendation, Moitra called the panel report against her a “pre-fixed match by a kangaroo court.”
Reacting to the recommendations of the report, Moitra said that even if the Lok Sabha expels her, she will be back to the House with a bigger mandate.
“This is a pre-fixed match by a kangaroo court, which is of no surprise or consequence. But the larger message for the country is that for India, it is the death of parliamentary democracy,” she said.
Meanwhile, the TMC came out strongly in support of its party MP Moitra, with Trinamool general secretary Abhishek Banerjee claiming that whoever questioned the government was “harassed” by the BJP-led NDA dispensation at the Centre.
Expressing solidarity with Moitra, the Trinamool Congress (TMC) labelled the move as “vendetta politics,” accusing the BJP of attempting to stifle voices critical of the central government.
