'Absolutely Pathetic': Gautam Gambhir, Dale Steyn And Others React to Angelo Mathews' Time-out Dismissal
Angelo Mathews took more than two minutes to take strike and opposition skipper Shakib Al Hasan appealed, which was upheld by the on-field umpire.

Former India cricketer Gautam Gambhir slammed the Bangladesh cricket team for the controversial timed-out dismissal of Sri Lanka all-rounder Angelo Mathews in the ODI World Cup match at Arun Jaitley Stadium. Mathews got his name in an unwanted record book by becoming the first batter to get out ‘timed-out’ in international cricket.

The veteran Sri Lanka all-rounder took more than two minutes to take strike and opposition skipper Shakib Al Hasan appealed, which was upheld by the on-field umpire.

According to article 40.1.1 of the ICC playing conditions for the 2023 World Cup, “After the fall of a wicket or the retirement of a batter, the incoming batter must, unless Time has been called, be ready to receive the ball, or for the other batter to be ready to receive the next ball within two minutes of the dismissal or retirement. If this requirement is not met, the incoming batter will be out, Timed out.” Article 40.1.2 says: “In the event of an extended delay in which no batter comes to the wicket, the umpires shall adopt the procedure of Law 16.3 (ICC Match referee awarding a match).

Gambhir wrote on X, formerly known as Twitter and termed the incident as pathetic.

“Absolutely pathetic what happened in Delhi today! #AngeloMathews,” Gambhir posted.

Former South Africa pacer Dale Steyn also reacted and wrote, “Well, that wasn’t cool.”

Former India batter S Badrinath also shared his opinion and wrote, “If I was #Shakib I would not have appealed as a Captain and I would have broken more than just a helmet if I was #AngeloMathews #SLvsBan.”

Michael Vaughan, who is known for his witty humour on X and wrote, “Timed OUT for helmet issues .. that’s a new one .. #CWC2023.”

Mathews came into bat after the fall of Sadeera Samarawickrama in the 25th over but was unable to secure his helmet tightly enough, an action which delayed the resumption of play.

Following the Bangladesh appeal, the umpires held a lengthy discussion with the players including Mathews.

The vastly-experienced Mathews was playing in his 225th one-day international on Monday in a career which has yielded 5,900 runs and 122 wickets.

He has also played 106 Tests and 78 Twenty20 internationals.
