Javed Akhtar Reveals He Wrote 'Tumko Dekha Toh Yeh Khayal Aya' In 9 Minutes: 'The Director Needed To..'
Javed Akhtar, famous for his Hindi film songs, shared that he wrote Jagjit Singh's 'Tumko Dekha Toh Yeh Khayal Aaya' in just nine minutes.

c The song was created for Raman Kumar’s 1982 film Saath Saath, featuring Deepti Naval and Farooq Sheikh. Javed mentioned that the director, aware of the time constraints, kept checking the watch as he needed to catch the last train of the day.

He also remembered how the romantic song ‘Ek Ladki Ko Dekha’ from 1942: A Love Story came to be. Despite its reputation as one of the most romantic songs of the 1990s, Javed revealed that the initial inspiration for the song was ‘terror’. During an interview with Red FM India, he mentioned suggesting to director Vidhu Vinod Chopra that a song was needed for a specific scene. Interestingly, he promptly forgot about it after leaving the meeting.

He shared, “I suggested that there could be a good song here. He said, ‘No, it’s not the right place. The boy and girl have not even met yet. He has only seen a glimpse of her and he doesn’t even know that she lives here, he is still looking for her, where will we fit a song here? And anyway there is a romantic song in a while so what’s the point of a song here?’” But because Javed was insistent, Vinod asked him to write a song and come back with it in four days.

On the day of the meeting, Javed realised he had completely forgotten about it. Feeling embarrassed and nervous while driving, he wondered what to say since he had convinced everyone about the song. Javed remembered entering the meeting with full confidence and speaking the line ‘Ek ladki ko dekha toh aisa laga,’ a phrase he had come up with on the way. “I said I have this line, and this will be followed by similes. I said if you like the idea, then I will write the song,” he recalled. RD Burman seemed to like his idea, and asked him to write the first few lines. “I sat in the corner and wrote the first para.” After reading it, RD sang the first few lines without much thought, and the song came together. Javed jokingly said that he has teased many women, telling them they inspired the song, but in truth, “the source of inspiration for this song is terror.”
